somebody posted a bunch of photos on the gambler facebook page, which included some shots of the Saab.
Unfortunately this wasn’t our fast pass through the sand, we had just gotten unstuck, and were only doing about 15-20mph, vs. our lap where we got a running start.
You can see us just having dug out in the background of this photo:
(I had followed somebody who took a wrong turn off the course, and got bogged down when re-entering, I luckily found a discarded flip flop to dig the front wheels out, and Stef gave a push and the Saab popped back to the surface of the sand).
The sand was was the most difficult part for a lot of the more modern cars, and even some of the four wheel drive ones.

Sand and mud are the only two surfaces I’m super afraid of when I’m offroading. Sand can do some weird stuff (like that time I almost put my Yukon into a lake) and mud will make you take the line it wants you to take. That said, mud that isn’t super deep can be really fun. Sand is never fun.

The Saab did pretty well in muddy sections (it was after
all designed for a Sweden without paved roads, and we actually tended to lose the pack on the muddier roads
) but the sand was another story. A lot of people were flooring it and getting stuck, I was driving like I was in unplowed snow (years of driving in Colorado) and we still got stuck that once - we didn’t even get in deep, the car just wouldn’t move forward or backward at one point,
and I wasn’t about to dig in until we were hub deep.

Excellent use of a discarded flip flop. 10 points for Gryffindor!
